The Dutch Blend Meeting, held for the first time at the end of May 2008 offers a substantial cross-section of the growing, wide-ranging and vigorous Dutch world music scene. The Dutch Blend World Music Guide is its paper and digital counterpart.
The seeds for both the guide and the meeting were sown by the sector organisation World Music Forum NL that was founded in August 2006 and which has since developed a number of activities to reinforce the world music scene in the Netherlands: monthly World Blend Café get-togethers held in the Tropentheater in Amsterdam, a Dutch Corner during the international Womex world music trade fair in Seville and a compilation CD called Sounds From Beyond World NL. World Music Forum NL also drew up the initial plans for the Dutch Blend Meeting and the guide you have before you.
Muziek Centrum Nederland is pleased to introduce you to the world music sector in The Netherlands through the Dutch Blend Meeting and this Dutch Blend World Music Guide, as booklet and on the web.
The heart of the guide is made up of more than 80 short artist's biographies including contact details. Although hundreds of artists and bands are active in the Netherlands, a selection had to be made and was based on three criteria. First, on a long list drawn up by a panel of experts from which they in turn made the showcase selections. Secondly, artists who had appeared on the Sounds from Beyond World NL CD distributed by World Music Forum NL at Womex 2007 in Seville. And thirdly the Dutch world music artists who will perform at the 2008 Dunya festival". The artist profiles artists are also available in Dutch language on www.wereldmuziekpodium.nl.
